Asnuntuck Community College offers a special waiver program to senior citizens over the age of 62. Senior Citizens are able to come to Asnuntuck on August 27th, the day classes begin for the fall semester and select any class, that is not at capacity, and enroll for free. Textbooks and usage fees are the only expense a senior will pay.

Ron Ormiston, from Enfield, has been taking advantage of the free opportunity since the spring of 2017. He learned about the program from a friend who was taking a photography class at the college. “As a retired educator, I’ve always believed that learning is a lifelong process. I’ve always been interested in technology and wanted to further my education and expertise in all the Microsoft programs,” said the senior. “So far, I’ve been taking Information Systems Technology courses. I’m currently finishing Microsoft Access, a database management program.” He added, “Upon completion of the course, I’m eligible to take the test to be Microsoft certified.”

After being on the other side of the desk for 37 years, as an elementary school teacher in Willington, in retirement he appreciates the support he receives at Asnuntuck. “Professor (Cheryl) Turgeon has made my “back to school” experience a smooth transition. Her courses are student friendly; they’re organized, paced well, the “hands-on” step by step approach of the textbook made the assignments easy to understand. Everything about the course setup encourages student success. As an educator, I found Professor Turgeon to be the consummate professional.”

He may have retired 10 years ago, but he still keeps busy. “I taught adult literacy in Hartford for 4 years and currently work part-time for UConn Neag School of Education in the spring as a clinical supervisor training their senior student teachers in their 12 week student teaching assignments,” said Ormiston, who also was a former high school /college soccer coach. “I’ve enjoyed being back in school and keeping busy with classwork.”

Asnuntuck is currently accepting applications from seniors. Seniors must apply by August 27th and can apply online anytime, or in person at the Admissions Office. Only Connecticut senior citizens are eligible for the waiver. To learn more, visit or call Admissions Office at (860) 253-3010.
