Asnuntuck Community College’s Continuing Education department will be offering a variety of courses related to Yoga, Zumba and Reiki beginning this fall.

Instructor Diana Ricci Gunther, owner of the former Flamingo Yoga Studios, will be offering two different 10 week sessions of Kripalu “All Levels” Yoga at Asnuntuck Community College. The sessions will focus on therapeutic yoga poses. Students, through practice, will tone and strengthen muscles. Gunther’s style of instruction is lighthearted. The classes will also help students improve their flexibility. Students can register for Monday classes which will run September 8th through November 10th from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and/or opt for Monday classes November 24th through February 2nd (no class 1/19) from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Both sessions have a fee of $100. Drop in is also an option with a rate of $12 per class. Walk-ins should call to confirm class is taking place prior to arriving.

Linda Tria, RMT, CST, LMT will be teaching two levels of Reiki at Asnuntuck in October and November. Both will offer training and certification.  Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation which also promotes healing. This holistic technique uses universal life force energy. Students will be taught how to use this soft touch on and or above a fully clothed body. Students will learn the history and techniques of Reiki. This class will be interactive with students giving treatments to themselves and to others in the class.

Tria, who owns Healing Essence in Ellington, recommends that students who have not experienced a Reiki treatment receive one from the instructor prior to the first night of class. That session will be offered at a discounted rate.  Reiki 1 will be offered Mondays, October 6th and October 20th from 5:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Reiki II is available for students who have completed Reiki I and earned a certificate. Students who have taken the Reiki I course with a Reiki Master Teacher other than Tria will meet with her prior to the first class. This second course will also cover distant healing. Reiki II will meet Mondays, November 3rd and 17th from 5:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. Students for both Reiki I and Reiki II will pay the instructor $25, on the first night of class, for the book and materials. The fee for each of the courses is $148.00.

Those wishing to dance to the music can sign up for a six week Zumba session at ACC.  Walk-ins are also welcomed. The Latin-inspired dance fitness party has taken the country by storm. Students will learn four Latin-based dance styles, will be taught how to modify exercises and dance movements if needed due to their physical limitations or injuries. Proper warm up and cool down methods will be shared.

Taught by Cheryl Quintero classes begin Thursday, September 4th and end on October 9th.  A second six week session is being offered from October 16th through November 20th. They run from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. The fee is $30 for each six week session. Walk-ins are $8 per class. Walk-ins should call ahead to ensure class is running. An important note is that all students must complete and bring to the first class a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) form. This form is available from ACC’s Continuing Education Department and/or the class instructor. Students are not allowed to participate without this signed form. Also should students need medical clearance from their physician, this must be done prior to participating in their first class.
