Early Childhood Education (A.S.)

ECE Program at ACC Receives Continued Accreditation

Asnuntuck’s Early Childhood Education program has been accredited since 2012 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The program is designed to prepare qualified early childhood education students with the skills and competencies necessary to work effectively with young children from birth through age eight. This curriculum prepares students for positions as both teachers and assistant teachers in a variety of settings. For those individuals already employed in the field of early childhood education, this program will strengthen and enhance their professional competencies. In addition, a liberal arts core along with specialized early childhood education courses prepares students to transfer to baccalaureate programs for further study in child development or early childhood education.

The Early Childhood Education AS degree program at Asnuntuck Community College is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Early Childhood Higher Education Programs of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, www.naeyc.org. The accreditation term runs from June 2019 through June 2025.

Transfer Opportunities:

Students who want to teach in public school classrooms in grades kindergarten through second grade must transfer to a college that offers state certifications in education.  Students seeking to transfer to a four year college most often continue on at Bay Path University, Elms College, Westfield State University, Charter Oak College and the University of Hartford, which have articulation agreements with Asnuntuck Community College.  Eastern Connecticut State University is another potential transfer site.

Employment Information:

Students earning an A.S. degree in Early Childhood Education are employed as  teachers in child care centers, preschools and Head Start programs as well as paraprofessionals working in public schools.

As of the Fall 2023 semester, the Community Colleges will merge and become Connecticut State Community College (CT State), a statewide college comprised of all Connecticut’s current community college locations. Further details can be found and will be updated on the Frequently Asked Questions page: www.ct.edu/ctstate/academics.

Please work closely with your advisor/program coordinator to select your courses accordingly.
