Basic Skin Esthetics (non-credit)

Job Description

Estheticians provide skin treatments, hair removal, and other processes that help men and women maintain their personal appearance. Estheticians have extensive knowledge of skin types, potential allergies, and other complications that may arise from treatments so they can make expert recommendations for each client. Work environment can vary from sterile to spa like and plush resorts to home-based businesses.

Program Description

Course highlights include:

  • Skin Sciences: anatomy, physiology and histology of the skin, diseases and disorders.
  • General Sciences: anatomy and physiology of the body, infection control , first aid, chemistry, electricity and machines used in the practice of esthetics.
  • Theory: history of esthetics, ethics, communication, professionalism, resume building and job attainment skills.
  • Practical Esthetics: facial and body care protocols, massage, application and color theory of cosmetics plus hair removal techniques.
  • Business: fundamentals of business, management, business plan, marketing, contracts, laws, regulations and retail sales.

Admission Requirements

Students must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED to enroll in this course. Students who participate in this program are required to have the ability to perform multiple body movements including range of motion of extremities to maneuver in small spaces to complete tasks. Sufficient physical endurance is required to complete assigned work and/or projects in clinical practice.

This program is CT SNAP and MASS WIOA approved.

Students will be required to perform services on the public in our supervised spa clinic setting.

Please be aware that students with previous convictions may find it difficult to secure employment within this field.

Licensure for Estheticians is not required in CT. This program meets all requirements to apply for a Massachusetts Esthetics license, if students choose.

Time Commitment

This 3 month program includes 150 hours of classroom instruction an d 200 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 350 training hours.

Employment Outlook

Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of skin care specialists is projected to grow 13% from 2016 to 2026, much faster than average for all occupations. Earning potential for a Basic Esthetician in the area is approximately $37,388. Advanced estheticians earn an average of $13,000 more per year than basic estheticians. We highly recommend taking both Basic and Advanced programs to increase job opportunities and income potential.
