One Book Event

October 25, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

On Wednesday, October 25th, from 12:30 until 3 p.m., Cheryl Eckert of the A.J. Pappanikou Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the University of Connecticut Health Center, will speak at the fourth annual One-Book program at Asnuntuck Community College, 170 Elm Street in Enfield.

Eckert is the Coordinator, of Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities, and has done work in genetics, neuroscience, and human biology.

The book selection for this year is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Roberta Skloot.  It tells the story of an African American woman named Henrietta Lacks, who died in 1951 of cervical cancer, but whose cancerous cells became the first immortal human cell line, called HeLa.

HeLa made possible some of the most important medical discoveries of the 21st century, but we know little about the woman behind them.  Recently the book was made into a movie by Oprah Winfrey.

This is the fourth One-Book program at Asnuntuck Community College and the fourth time that the College has collaborated with the Enfield Public Library on this Program. The event will take place in Freshwater Commons and is open to the public.

This program is coordinated for the College by Marilynn S. Turner, Professor of English.
