On Tuesday, February 5th, 2013, Asnuntuck Community College will once again celebrate Black History Month with a Coffee House reading of poetry by African-American poets. This reading is part of the twenty-fourth month-long National African American Read-In, sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Council of Teachers of English.
Asnuntuck has been celebrating Black History Month since 1992, when Bev Jemison, now a Counselor at the college, was a Minority Fellow at Asnuntuck. She introduced the idea of the college being part of the National African-American Read-In to celebrate Black History Month each February. Readers this year will include Sherry Gelbwasser, ACC Librarian, and Edwina Trentham, ACC Professor Emeritus of English, as well as other faculty, staff, and students. Also participating will be Asnuntuck Alumna, Nzima Hutchings, and members of her Café Sisterhood/Book Club for Girls.
The Read-In, held in Café II from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, is free and open to the public, and copies of poetry by African-American writers will be available for those who would like to read. The formal reading will be followed by an open mic that continues the celebration of African-American poets. Refreshments will be served. For information contact Sherry Gelbwasser, firstname.lastname@example.org or Edwina Trentham at email@example.com.
