Asnuntuck Community College (ACC) has announced that the Asnuntuck Substitute Teacher Training Institute has been established through a partnership with the Enfield Public Schools and the Key Initiatives to Early Education (KITE) organization, and offers training to individuals who are currently employed as a substitute teacher and/or those wishing to become a substitute teacher in the future. Participants do not have to be substitute teachers in Enfield Public Schools to enroll in the one-week training and the coursework taught can be utilized in any classroom.
“The training is very hands-on, concrete, and instills confidence in the classroom,” explained ACC’s Coordinator for Early Childhood Education, Carol LaLiberte. “The coursework is designed for students interested in substitute teaching in pre-k through grade two classrooms.”
Instruction will be given on a variety of classroom management skills such as, how to conduct successful morning meetings, constructive ideas to keep students occupied throughout the day, strategies for working with special needs children, and how to handle emergency situations. Individuals that pass will be presented with a certificate for completing the institute’s training.
Students will also have the opportunity to apply for a substitute teacher or paraprofessional position through Kelly Educational Staffing® (KES®), the substitute teacher provider to Enfield Public Schools. Upon successful completion of the Kelly hiring process, candidates will be considered for positions within Enfield Public Schools through KES and other KES partner schools.
LaLiberte adds that a substitute teaching position is perfect for individuals who enjoy working with children and are looking for a flexible schedule.
The course will be offered from October 27th-October 31st from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information on this and other offerings, call (860) 253- 3034/3066 to register.
